USGS Application Architecture

Date and Time: 08/19/2008 - 6:00 - 8:00 PM
Location: 125 South Webster Street, Madison, WI Room 41
Speaker: I-Lin Kuo
Topic: I-Lin Kuo and Eric Everman will present how the USGS is using web services, web mapping services, and the J2EE platform in national level projects. Mapping topics include a demonstration of web mapping services (WMS), an introduction to the public USGS National Map catalog of WMS layers, and a demonstration of the USGS AJAX mapping framework. Java topics include case studies of two web service applications. The first, a web services application which streams large datasets, required the development of a custom web service framework. The second case study looks at design decisions and architecture of a data and computational intensive water science application which generates reports and maps for a broad audience.
